SHAME AND INTIMACY Canada
A three day workshop with Johannes B. Schmidt
Shame is a major challenge for many people. It is a stumbling block on the quest to meet our deepest needs including felt contact and relationship. Shame is a hidden sabotage dynamic that locks us up in an inner prison of isolation, fear and self-doubt. We no longer "feel felt" by others and so hide behind an adaptive self, hoping that no one will ever find out how defective, small and incapable we think and feel we are. Finally, we may even "think" that the face we present is our true nature.
Fortunately, our never-ending longing for connection cannot be silenced. The call for relationship, felt mutuality and bonding stays with us all our life. We have needs that cannot be ignored forever. However, self-regulation, happiness and satisfaction depend on our interaction with others. Turning shameful self-hatred into self-compassion, even self-love, is the "gold to be mined" when dealing with secretive inner shame dynamics.
It seems paradoxical, but we cannot handle our withdrawal from contact on our own. Children who find a skeleton in the bush may be meeting the one who has "won" the hide and- seek game. Seeking out how to contact the hidden is essential in freeing us from our self-conscious detention camp. It seems beyond imagination that our defective self can ever be met by another human. At least isolation is safe and saves us from being embarrassed when exposed to others. The hide-and-seek game becomes our life until we are found.
In this workshop, we will gain insight into the nature and dynamics of shame, toxic shame and shame resolution. With patience, sensitivity and flirtatious charm, we will put life back into skeletons, invent funnier games and turn the hidden secrets of the bushes into the intimacy of felt contact. Anyone with some self-awareness and ability to reflect and self regulate is welcome – with or without a skeleton (or two!).

FOUNDATIONAL TRAUMA TRAINING IN THE NETHERLANDS
A 16 day foundational teaching course in
trauma-healing, self-regulation, and the deepening of (self-)intimacy
for professionals working with people
It is time for more depth. It is time for refinement in our relationships. It is time to meet our deepest needs, create more non-sexual, but deeply felt, intimacy in human contacts, and connect to the nourishing essence of our being-nature. We do not have time to do it quickly. We carefully need to develop mindfulness, gentleness and authentic friendliness to bring about a healing quality in our daily relationships, that can even overcome the common traumata of our daily life.
In essence, we need to heal our conditions of isolation, competition, distrust and fear. We need to look into our innermost perceptive patterns and reach into the inner structure of how we do ourselves, and relate to people around us. This requires an unknown gentleness, safety, and elicitation skills that we learn nowhere else in our education or career.
We think it is time for refined trauma-healing work to get into an ever deeper relationship with ourselves, be more connected, and deeply enjoy relating to people and life. Times are changing and trauma-healing is a gateway into changing the way how we change.
For that reason, in this training you will learn about the nature of shock and developmental trauma, consequences of traumatic impairment in everyday life, and basic body-based orientation to “meet” dysregulated people and make them “feel felt”. New possibilities of interaction feed back on ourselves and appease our own restlessness and widen our orientation about our self and nature.
Your benefit from this training will be extra skills in your professional “people business” tool box. Your understanding will open new possibilities of engaging your customers, clients, partners, children, and other relevant people in your life. You will add a new body-based perspective to your common communication concepts and notice the difference between being in touch with a concept or in touch with the situation in the here-and-now. This training opens the door into a future culture of connection, co-operation and reciprocity.
Besides, the training offers a substantial introduction into basics of somatically oriented traumahealing and includes relevant aspects of self-relationship. Traumawork is about developing a felt-sense of self and the lifeworld around you. It is about getting into coherent resonance with the fundamental rhythms of life and helps you to get in touch with who you are.
Requirements for the training:
- A job where you have some responsibility for people’s well-being, either in health profession, leadership function, emergency or rescue team, education, and others.
- You have done substantial self-exploration and have basic self-regulation skills.
- You are aware that this course is no therapy (group), no self-exploration or personal growth group but a professional training course that requires intellectual learning, practical experience, and personal engagement. Following this training requires substantial theoretical work, regular practice, and self-care. In this group we will teach and practice basic trauma-resolution approaches. Note that this course cannot replace needed psychotherapeutic self-modification.
- You are willing and aware that following this course may need that you take individual sessions, read literature, have a possibility to practically apply what you learned, and enlist additional resources for your personal process outside the training if needed.

ADVANCED TRAUMA TRAINING IN THE NETHERLANDS
This course is no course it is about your deepest self.
This 2 x 4 day training-course builds on the basic trauma training and aims at deepening and refining the trauma treatment skills already acquired. Here we are working with trauma constellations, co-create healing fields and learn more about dealing with developmental trauma. The course is designed to meet the actual needs of the participants, offers space for personal processes and focuses on the non-verbal communication with inner embryos. Relating to your own health, working non-verbally and providing a safe and sometimes sacred space for deep change are constituent parts of the work. We aim at inviting healing processes and reconnection with our true self. Spirituality at that level can no longer be denied and more often than not leads you into a personal space of deep reunion with your own roots, your deepest source. Deep change, deep healing and a quiet equanimity ensue.
The intention of this course is to take you beyond “techniques” and to help your treatment skills deepen into your own truth, your own personal experience and your own presence with the “client” at an ever subtler level. This course is not about doing anything but about healing in silence. The course is about inviting the change and healing in a respectful way. The course is about your attitude so that the healing can arise by itself out of emptiness, nothingness and silence. This course is a great challenge for the practitioner/facilitator to stay out of the way and regulate his awareness and presence in a non-invasive, supportive, beneficial way. This course is about trusting your health more than anything else and is therefore about surrender. This course is no course it is about your deepest self.

ADVANCED TRAUMA TRAINING IN BELGIUM
A 2x4 day trainingcourse for deeping your self-relationship and interrelational
healing skills
This 2 x 4 day training course builds on the foundational trauma training of Aptitude Academy. It aims at deepening and refining the trauma treatment skills already acquired. Here we are working with trauma constellations, co-create healing fields, deepen into qualities of presence, stillness, explore sound healing, and the innate healing plan of the body.
The course is designed to meet the actual needs of the participants, offers space for personal processes and focuses on touching the untouchable in us. The deeping of our self-relationship can open inner spaciousness that participants describe as spaciousness or sacredness. Spirituality at that level can no longer be denied and more often than not leads you into a personal space of deep reunion with your own roots, your deepest source.
The intention of this course is to take you beyond "techniques" and to help your treatment skills deepen into your own truth, your own personal experience and your own presence with the "client" at an ever subtler level. This course is not about doing anything but about inviting what wants to present itself at a particular moment in time. The course is about attitude so that healing can arise by itself out of emptiness, nothingness and silence.

BONDING AND ATTACHMENT
Two day workshop on developmental psychology.
A basic course about how we built our intimate relationship skills in early
life presented by Thomas Harms.
In all of us lives a deep longing for contact, connection, and feeling felt. Often this need for contact and relationship drives us into romance or dreams of being nutured, seen, and held. Our most intimate couple relationships become the place to play out most basic needs, and indeed, the contact we could injoy after birth and around the first year of life becomes the nodal point of all relational longing later in life.
In this workshop we want to learn from Thomas Harms how intense relationships are building and how they are playing out in the course of life. Thomas, an expert on working with cry-babies and on establishing felt-contact between caretaker and childen, will take us into his world of nurturing, attachment, bonding, and safe soothing. He will share his psychological experience, practical wisdom, and first-hand expert knowledge about this delicate phase in our life where engaging in contact is literally a matter of life or death.
In this workshop you will learn about:
- how Thomas’ work helps cry-babies to reconnect to their secure base
- the neurophysiological foundations for health and thriving in life
- basic concepts about (self-)regulation of your psychophysiological integrity
- resonance exercises to understand how caretakers or (inner) babies feel
- simple steps for interactive repair and resonant mutuality
- what breaks early contact and how to continue rather than discontinue connection
- how to break vicious, stress-inducing interaction cycles to bring about ease, feeling, and connection
- how to involve your own body as a reference for secure self-relationship
Target group:
People from all walks of life who have understood how much anybody needs deeply felt contact – everybody. Health and educational professionals may as much benefit as you, me and our partners. Can you feel that you are welcome?
Presenter:
Thomas Harms, psychologist and body therapist, has been working for more than 20 years in the field of preventive psychotherapy and facilitation of bonding between parents, babies, and toddlers. He is the founding director of a cry-baby facility in Bremen/Germany (Zentrum für primäre Prävention, ZEPP), a regional centre for education, training of parents and professionals alike. As editior and author of seminal books. Thomas spreads his ideas about prevention rather than belated intervention nationwide in Germany. Naturally, his practical qualification also stems from his marriage and the joint upbringing of two beautiful sons.
Notice:
Thomas will present the course in English or German according to what proves to be most effective for the training.

FOUNDATIONAL TRAUMA TRAINING IN BELGIUM
A 16 day foundational teaching course in
trauma-healing, self-regulation, and the deepening of (self-)intimacy.
What is trauma
Trauma is much more common than we think. Sometimes it goes along with the recall of a specific overwhelming event. Very often, it is related to early misattuned caretaking that has an impact on our maturing nervous system. Frequently, we have no recollection of any traumatic event but experience the world in an uneasy or scary way. No matter whether the cause is shock or developmental trauma, the habitual dysregulation in our nervous system (trauma) impairs the quality of our life in many different ways.
Intention of the training
This training course aims to learn you at the building of health, resiliency and the recovery of vitality. It offers a substantial introduction into basics of somatically oriented traumahealing and includes relevant aspects of self-relationship. Traumawork is about connecting with our own being nature and with resources in life. It is about developing a felt-sense of yourself and the lifeworld around you. It is about getting into coherent resonance with the fundamental rhythms in life and helps you to get in touch with who you are.
Target group
People who work with people. Requirement to join this training group is a certain skill in introspection, a basic capacity of self regulation skills and preferable previous experience in psychotherapeutic methods. If you are in doubt about your background, please contact Anne Wuyts or Josephine Overeem.

POST ADVANCED TRAUMAWORK SEMINAR IN THE NETHERLANDS
Chronic Traumatization: The Theory of Structural Dissociation of the Personality
and Action-focused Dissociation Therapy.
Ellert Nijenhuis, PhD
What is trauma
This workshop presents an overview of the theory of structural dissociation and a psychology of action, and their application in the various treatment phases of chronically traumatized individuals. The theory hypothesizes that traumatization divides the biopsychosocial system that constitutes an individual’s personality. The basic division is between biopychosocial action systems that direct us in functions of daily life (e.g., attachment, play, exploration) and reproduction (i.e., survival of the species), and in a psychobiological action system that directs us in animal-defense like reactions to major threat (i.e., survival of the individual). In chronic traumatization structural dissociation becomes ever more complex and fixed. The workshop highlights the breakdown of integrative actions during traumatization that causes structural dissociation, describes mental and behavioral actions that maintain structural dissociation, and emphasize integrative actions needed to resolve structural dissociation and become more adaptive in meeting daily life challenges. Phase-oriented treatment is framed in terms of overcoming specific trauma-related phobias. Phase 1 is geared toward overcoming phobias of trauma-derived mental and behavioral actions, of dissociative parts of the personality, and of attachment and attachment loss with the therapist. Phase 2 is directed toward overcoming the phobia of traumatic memories, and phobias related to insecure attachment to perpetrator(s). In Phase 3, treatment is focused on overcoming phobias of normal life, healthy risk-taking and change, and intimacy. In clinical practice, these phases are flexible and recursive. The presentation includes didactics on theory and demonstration of some techniques for each treatment phase using live demonstrations and practical exercises.
Ellert R.S. Nijenhuis, Ph.D.,
is a clinical psychologist, psychotherapist, and researcher. He received his Ph.D. (cum laude – the highest degree possible in the Netherlands) at the Medical Department of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam for his book: Somatoform dissociation: Phenomena, measurement, and theoretical issues [reprint: W.W. Norton, New York/London]. In 1998 the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD) granted him the Morton Prince Award for Scientific Excellence for his scientific contributions; in 2000 the Pierre Janet Writing Award; in 2002 the status of Fellow for his outstanding contributions to the diagnosis, treatment, research, and education in dissociative disorders; and in 2005, together with several of his colleagues, the David Caul Memorial Award for a paper on an innovative PET study of dissociative identiy disorder. He works at the Outpatient Department of Psychiatry of Mental Health Care Drenthe, Assen, The Netherlands, where he engages in the diagnosis and treatment of severely traumatized patients. He performs his innovating scientific research at this hospital, and collaborates with the University of Groningen (Netherlands), the University of Zürich (Switzerland), and several clinics. His empirical and experimental research addresses the psychology and psychobiology of chronic traumatization and dissociation. He has written many clinical and scientific articles, book chapters, and some books. He is also a reviewer of several professional journals and provides presentations and workshops at many international conferences. In 2003, he was granted the closing plenary at the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (Chicago) addressing the emerging psychobiology of trauma-related dissociation and dissociative disorders. He is a former Director of the Executive Council of the ISSTD. In 2004 Queen Beatrix from the Netherlands appointed him Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion for his outstanding contributions to the study and treatment of chronically traumatized individuals. In 2005, together with Helga Matthess, he founded Psychotraumatology Institute Europe. PIE organizes workshops and courses with leaders in the field regarding the assessment and treatment of chronic traumatization. November 2006 witnessed the release of the book The haunted self: Structural dissociation and the treatment of chronic traumatization, authored by Onno van der Hart, Ellert Nijenhuis and Kathy Steele, and published by W.W. Norton, New York/London. The authors were awarded ISSTD’s Media Award for this work. According to Prof. Dr. Chris Brewin, the book is “brilliant,” and Dr. Richard Kluft regards it as “ …. a landmark contribution to the study of trauma and an instant classic in the study of dissociation and dissociative disorders.”
