FOUNDATIONAL TRAUMA TRAINING IN THE NETHERLANDS

A 16 day foundational teaching course in
trauma-healing, self-regulation, and the deepening of (self-)intimacy.

Trauma is much more common than we think. Sometimes it goes along with the recall of a specific overwhelming event. Very often, it is related to early misattuned caretaking that has an impact on our maturing nervous system. Frequently, we have no recollection of any traumatic event but experience the world in an uneasy or scary way. No matter whether the cause is shock or developmental trauma, the habitual dysregulation in our nervous system (trauma) impairs the quality of our life in many different ways.

More often than not, we do not put our predicament down to traumatic impairment. And yet, the upset nervous system cannot regulate our inner state adaptively. This makes it difficult to respond to actual situations in the here-and-now. Intrusive thoughts, images, emotions dominate our perception and the challenges of life appear insurmountable. We are preoccupied attending to the symptoms of dysregulation which may play out as rapid mood swings, lack of concentration, grumpiness, or "jumpiness" when it comes to touch, as well as lack of memory. Symptoms may also present as chronic impairments including post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety or mood disorders, phobias, eating disorders. The physical symptoms of dysregulation come as insomnia, asthma, allergies, migraines, tinnitis (ringing in the ears), hyperacusis (sensitivity to sound), photophobia (sensitivity to light), chronic pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, autoimmune diseases, gastrointestinal difficulties, problems with concentration and memory, headaches, pain in neck and back, clenching and grinding, alcohol and drug abuse. Our inner frame of reference may get set on hyperarousal, feeze-states, or distrust and thwart our quality of life.

This training course aims at the building of health, resiliency and the recovery of vitality. It offers a substantial introduction into basics of somatically oriented traumahealing and includes relevant aspects of self-relationship. Traumawork is about connecting with our own being nature and with resources in life. It is about developing a felt-sense of yourself and the lifeworld around you. It is about getting into coherent resonance with the fundamental rhythms in life and helps you to get in touch with who you are.

In the training we introduce you into the nature of trauma and its behavioural, relational and emotional consequences. We explore the effect of traumatic overwhelm and stressful long-term attrition. You will begin to understand why you do many things you wonder about, including avoiding social contacts, feeling uncomfortable, finding yourself In the midst of a panic attack, in states of shame, shyness, or withdrawal without good reason, to name but a few.

You will learn about bodybased treatment techniques, psychological and interactional ways of dealing with traumatized people and the co-creation of intimate healing fields. The course is about safe interaction, resource-orientation, and reconnecting with the body's inherent treatment plan. The role of the autonomous nervous system will be explored and you will experience the power of gentleness, silence, and restored self-regulation. Dis-ease turns into ease, connection and flow. The power of slow-motion traumahealing constellations, that make vulnerability and the inner embryo accessible, completes the course. To touch the source of your being nature is a humbling and a quietly revitalizing experience. Sometimes, it can be an awe-inspiring journey to the actual experience of your spiritual roots.

TRAUMA ADVANCED

This course is no course – it is about your deepest self.

This 2 x 4 day training-course builds on the basic trauma training and aims at deepening and refining the trauma treatment skills already acquired. Here we are working with trauma constellations, co-create healing fields and learn more about dealing with developmental trauma. The course is designed to meet the actual needs of the participants, offers space for personal processes and focuses on the non-verbal communication with inner embryos. Relating to your own health, working non-verbally and providing a safe and sometimes sacred space for deep change are constituent parts of the work. We aim at inviting healing processes and reconnection with our true self. Spirituality at that level can no longer be denied and more often than not leads you into a personal space of deep reunion with your own roots, your deepest source. Deep change, deep healing and a quiet equanimity ensue.

The intention of this course is to take you beyond “techniques” and to help your treatment skills deepen into your own truth, your own personal experience and your own presence with the “client” at an ever subtler level. This course is not about doing anything but about healing in silence. The course is about inviting the change and healing in a respectful way. The course is about your attitude so that the healing can arise by itself out of emptiness, nothingness and silence. This course is a great challenge for the practitioner/facilitator to stay out of the way and regulate his awareness and presence in a non-invasive, supportive, beneficial way. This course is about trusting your health more than anything else and is therefore about surrender. This course is no course – it is about your deepest self.

HEARTFELT SELF-REGULATION – TRAUMA HEALING IN THE HUMAN HEART

A 3 - day seminar with Michael Shea, Ph.D. in the Netherlands.

In recent years, body-based trauma healing has been very much identified with discharges in the Autonomic Nervous System. The (triune) brain and its primary survival functions have been the centre of therapeutic attention.

However, recent research reveals the heart as a crucial moderator of our brain and self-experience. The heart turns out to be a nervous system in itself with more than 80 % neuronal tissue. This finding has far-reaching consequences for our understanding of trauma, self-regulation and well-being.

In this trauma healing seminar, we will focus on the effect of trauma imprinted on the heart and cardiovascular system. We will increase our understanding of how the heart co-regulates and co-moderates existential survival and experiential functions. The effect on sensorimotor, emotional, cognitive, self-regulatory and spiritual aspects of our world-experience will be demonstrated.

Three levels of practice will be stressed:

By focusing on the heart, we are focusing on the core of the human body and its regulatory mechanisms. We will investigate its far-reaching consequences for self-regulation skills and sense of belonging and relating. Join us on this fascinating journey to the core of our existence.

Course facilitation:

Michael J. Shea, Ph.D. received his doctorate in somatic psychology from the Union Institute. He has a master degree in Buddhist Psychology from the Naropa Institute and is adjunct faculty at the Santa Barbara Graduate Institute. He teaches embryology in the pre- and perinatal psychology doctoral programs there. He has specialized in psychophysiology and trauma resolution with infants and adults in his clinical practice. He is the author of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy Vol. 1 and 2 both available from North Atlantic Books. The course material comes from these books. He is a student of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.
